He was even subbed in some games at the beginning as Vieira tried to work out how to get the right balance for the team,  but since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, the man regarded as easily one of the best to ever wear the Red and Blue has been sensational.

In the Premier League only Jota, Mane, Salah, Ronaldo, Kane and Son  have scored more goals than Zaha.

He was also instrumental in helping the Eagles reach the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley even if they eventually lost to Cheslea.

Chairman Steve Parish recently said the club would do everything in their power to keep him and now manager Patrick Vieira has described him as an absolute winner.

The Crystal Palace boss said after his winning goal against Southampton: “Wilfried is a fighter.

“He stays strong and on his feet and I don’t want him to change his game at all. He’s a goalscorer. He’s a winner. He can play on any ground and be ready for it.”

With just four games to end the season players contracts will take centre stage and Vieira’s glowing tribute to his talisman will likely go a long way deciding how far talks go. One thing is for certain he is one they want to keep even if the club is looking to the future.
