Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson says he has nothing but respect for his players after they defied the odds and went to Old Trafford and came out with all three points.

The veteran Palace manager also became the first manager in history to have remained unbeaten after five visits to Manchester United in the league.

The win makes up for the disappointment of losing to the same opponents in the League Cup in mid-week. Manager Hodgson says his players gave everything and there was little he could ask for more.

He told reporters after the game at Old Trafford: “I’m happy about that. But I’m most happy with the way the team played today and so pleased for the players.

“It wasn’t easy coming here for the second time a few days, but to give that performance, to work that hard and to defend as well as we did throughout the 90 minutes, I’m happy to win the game – that’s what gives me the most satisfaction.

“I’m not even sure I can tell you about the other games before, but I’m pretty certain I would have been pretty delighted after those as well.

“I would have been saying the same sort of things I am saying now. All credit to the players as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps an extra mention simply because Tuesday night was such a disappointment.

“We didn’t come here to lose 3-0 – we came here hoping to progress in the EFL Cup – but we were dumped out of that really with the Man United performance on Tuesday.”

Palace are now ninth in the league table, having won three, drawn two and lost two of their first seven league games.
