All is in place for Frank Lampard to sign a short-term deal and take his first Chelsea training this afternoon, ahead of the game against Wolves in the Premier League.

The 44-year-old was at Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea play out a 0-0 draw against Liverpool, and sources have told LondonWorld that it was during the match that talks accelerated for Lampard’s sensational return.

His appointment will be solely on a short-term basis and allows the owners to continue their search for a permanent manager who will align with the project that has been put together - and backed by record-breaking transfers in the last two windows.

The attention Lampard got and his relationship with fans while watching the Liverpool game with Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali, and co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, is said to have played a role in pushing through the decision to bring him back.

The former Everton boss, sources say, was instantly open to the idea of returning to Chelsea the moment it was offered as he has been without a job since his sacking by the Toffees in January this year.

Former England midfielder Frank Lampard’s relationship with players like Mason Mount and Thiago Silva, whom he brought to the club, is said to have weighed heavily in his favour, especially at a time where calm heads are needed to see out what has been a difficult campaign.

He is expected to arrive at Cobham this morning where he will sign his contract and get straight into work ahead of this weekend’s visit to the Molineaux to face relegation threatened Wolves.

Sources say Chelsea remain keen to talk to some of the world’s best managers, but are determined to go through every detail to ensure they appoint the right man for the long term.

Julian Nagelsmann, sacked by Bayern Munich last month, is still one being considered, as well as former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, who flew into London to hold initial talks with the club on Tuesday.

The Independent has reported that another former Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, could be interviewed for the role, especially if Chelsea fail to qualify for Champions League next season.

Conte, who just left his job at Tottenham, is regarded by many as the best manager in the world when he doesn’t have the burden of Champions League football - and when he has the luxury of time to prepare his team for one game per week.

Former manager Graham Potter was handed a five year deal but was sacked just seven months into it, following just 12 wins and 11 losses in 31 games.

Lampard’s return is likely to be beneficial to Mason Mount in particular, a player he transformed during his time at Derby County and turned into a superstar at Chelsea.

The fans are also likely to get behind Lampard, a club legend and still the record goal scorer in the club’s history, despite being a midfielder.
