Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was seen furiously pointing at police before helping guide his team off the pitch in an ill-tempered game between Brazil and Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers.

Whenever Argentina meet Brazil tempers are high and emotions boil over but this was on another level. Kick-off was delayed and Argentina skipper Lionel Messi led his team back into the dressing room as the chaos continued in the stands.

The close proximity of the two sets of rival fans appeared to cause problems and sparked violent scenes during the national anthems before the game was due to get underway.

Police launched a baton charge at Argentina supporters during Brazil's national anthem as the trouble threatened to get out of hand. The chaos on the field is what led to Fernandez briefly having a chat with the police before adhering to instructions from captain Lionel Messi to walk off the pitch.

The Chelsea midfielder started the game and is now expected to be back in London on Thursday, giving him just a day to train and hopefully be ready for the game against Newcastle United.

The World Cup winners eventually had the last laugh though with a Nicolas Otamendi header just after the hour mark giving them a 1-0 win which would have delighted the away side given all the trouble before kick-off and during the game.

Fernandez has only missed one league game all season and is expected to start when Chelsea make the trip to Newcastle this weekend.
