Kai Havertz  is the first player in the history of Chelsea Football Club to have scored the winning goal in the UEFA Champions League and also the Club World Cup but his manager says he can still be a better player if he applies himself properly.

The European Champions signed the attacking German sensation two years ago in a deal worth £71m.

Before joining Chelsea-the Germany international has scored 36 goals and contributed 25 assists in 118 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

He has managed just 43 appearances, scoring six goals and four assists in the Premier League in two season as he continued to adapt to Englishfootball.

Undoubtedly he was the hero of the Champions League after confidently scoring the only goal against Manchester City back in May.

He returned to score a 117th-minute penalty to ensure the Blues were crowned Club World Cup Champions in Abu Dhabi when everyone expected the game to go to the penalty shoot-out.

His big game goals have somewhat made up for his inconsistency in the Premier League but manager Thomas Tuchel says he will have to work on his reliability, technique and shooting if he is to achieve his true potential.

The German manager said ahead of the club’s visit Crystal Palace this weekend: “If we isolate the goalscoring, then yeah, we expect more and he expects more, but the consistency in what he is given to the team, he has stepped up and pretty consistent.

“We can see a lot of intensity in his game and physicality. He has stepped that up this season, we have seen in training.

“I think he is in the process of being more reliable and being more consistent. Of course, he is an offensive player and has the ability to score. We want more goals and he wants more goals.

“In this part of the game he can improve, be more clinical and precise. Use his technique better in shooting. So there is room to develop.

He has stepped up twice in big matches, in big moments, and this can only be good for his development.”

The Blues will now put their Club World Cup celebrations aside and try to get all three points when they travel to Selhurst to take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are currently third on the league table seven points behind second placed Liverpool but the season will be considered a successful one if they can win the Carabao Cup next week against Liverpool and defend their Champions League trophy.
