The Blues have broken records in recent years with their scattergun transfer policy but it has clearly begun to pay dividends after a successful season which ended with two major trophies and a top-four spot in the Premier League.
Further transfer targets continue to be linked with Chelsea following the purchases of the likes of Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, with a former La Masia academy star now linked to becoming the newest marquee signing at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s transfer policy has focused on signing young talent and that looks set to continue. The Blues and RB Leipzig could engage in a massive swap deal which could go a long way to solving dilemmas for both clubs this summer.
Chelsea and RB Leipzig swap deal could be on the cards
Chelsea have been linked with RB Leipzig and Netherlands playmaker Xavi Simons in recent days, with the 22-year-old keen on departing the German side and Chelsea viewing him as a top young player capable of challenging for a starting role in the Blues’ talent-stacked attacking positions.
Fresh reports by Florian Plettenberg on X now state that Leipzig could be interested in a Chelsea man in return. The report states that Leipzig have opened talks over 21-year-old midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, who spent part of last campaign on loan at Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and is likely to struggle with forcing his way back into Enzo Maresca’s plans in the new campaign. Plettenberg states that further steps in a potential move for Chukwuemeka are planned for Wednesday.
The report adds that Leipzig have also been informed of Chelsea’s interest in Simons and are “prepared to sell”, with a verbal agreement between the player and Chelsea “close”. An agreement could open the door for a huge swap deal between the two clubs.
Simons and Chukwuemeka swap deal could work out for all parties
The main cause for optimism here is that all parties are believed to be open to the transfers in question. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Chelsea want “only a permanent sale” for Chukwuemeka this summer, while Simons expressed his desire to depart Leipzig prior to the end of the Bundesliga season and the club are likely to reluctantly sanction an exit for their wantaway prized asset.
Neither club want a player on their books who is not actively invested in playing for the first team and so a swap deal may be the ideal solution. The only question remains the make-up of a deal.
Simons may be available for under €70m (£60m) while Chelsea are likely to demand more than the £20m they paid for Chukwuemeka in 2022, potentially somewhere in the region of £25m-£30m.
An offer by Chelsea of £30m plus Chukwuemeka for Simons may be enough to get the deal done, though the clubs may decide to approach these as two separate moves for accounting purposes.
