Fabrizio Romano: Bundesliga ace could be on for huge Chelsea move - 'doors opened'

Chelsea might not be done with their transfer business this summer

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was tasked this summer of adding to an already-winning side, as the Blues followed up Europa Conference League success with victory in the Club World Cup final.

The prize money obtained from the tournament will only increase the belief that the West London side can still add to their heavily-stocked squad with the aim of going one better and challenging for the Premier League title in coming seasons.

The Chelsea project under Todd Boehly is progressing quicker than was expected and these are exciting times for fans as the Blues look to ramp up their success by another level in 2025/26.

The likes of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens have already been brought in to improve the Chelsea attack but the club may not be done there, as a talented young star has been linked with joining them in a sensational summer move to Stamford Bridge.

Xavi Simons may swap RB Leipzig for Chelsea in huge transfer

According to reports by Fabrizio Romano on X, talks between Chelsea and RB Leipzig are set to commence over a potential transfer for 22-year-old playmaker Xavi Simons.

Romano states that direct contact has been made with Simons’ camp and the player has “opened doors” to a move to Stamford Bridge, with talks between the clubs scheduled for Tuesday to discuss the potential conditions around a deal. Arsenal are also said to be interested, but their priorities are elsewhere.

Simons is keen to depart the German club and reportedly informed them of his intention to leave at the end of the season, while Leipzig will be glad to get an unhappy player off the books just a matter of months after they signed him for a reported package of €80m including add-ons. From a Chelsea perspective, a potential move for Simons would depend on outgoings, reports Romano.

What Xavi Simons could add to Chelsea’s attack

This move may be surprising on face value, considering that Chelsea already have one of the world’s best young attacking midfielders in Cole Palmer, who struck a devastating double in the Club World Cup final. But the very best squads have rotation and competition for places, and Simons would add a new dimension to this at Stamford Bridge.

Simons can also operate on either wing and should the Blues find suitors for frozen-out stars Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix, space could open up within the squad with the Netherlands international capable of featuring for Maresca’s side from a variety of attacking positions. Formerly of Barcelona and PSG during his youth, Simons has undeniable pedigree and a sky-high ceiling if he is able to find a true home for the first time in his career.

Speaking with the media following a Bundesliga fixture against Holsten Kiel in April, Simons cryptically said: “I’m still a young player, I have many dreams – and the club knows that. But right now, the most important thing for me is to play well in the upcoming games. Then we have the international matches, and after that we’ll sit down and see what happens.”
