Ex Chelsea and Crystal Palace star involved in horror brawl - arrests made

Ex Chelsea and Crystal Palace striker Michy Batshuayi attempted to perform a spinning kick on a football fan as Trabzonspor supporters invaded the pitch to attack Fenerbahce players in a violent clash on Sunday.

The scenes, which have horrified footballing fans across the globe, took place in Turkey after Fenerbahce secured a late Super Lig win against rivals Trabzonspor. The former Blues and Eagles talisman was the man who found the 87th minute in the 3-2 victory, with former Manchester United man Fred also bagging a brace.

At full-time Trabzonspor fans stormed the pitch at Papara Park to confront Fenerbahce players, who were left defending themselves. The victorious visiting side's players had been celebrating their victory in the middle of the pitch, which appeared to increase the high tensions even more.

Batshayi was making his way off the pitch when he spotted one invader sprinting towards teammates. He aimed an audacious spinning kick at the fan but didn't quite make enough contact to stop the pitch invader. The former Chelsea man stoked the fire on social media afterwards too as he shared an image of his celebration with an eruption emoji.

The Belgian joined Chelsea in 2016 and made 77 appearances for the club, scoring 25 goals in a hit-and-miss spell. The striker then spent two loan spells at Crystal Palace, scoring eight goals in 33 outings.

Former QPR star Bright Osayi-Samuel was also caught up in the incident as he was seen punching a supporter as he fought back against the pitch invaders.

After the brawl, Turkey’s interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, tweeted: "After the Trabzonspor-Fenerbahçe football match played this evening, identification efforts regarding the spectators entering the field and an investigation into the events that took place after the match were immediately launched.

"Sports is, above all, sportsmanship. It is never acceptable for violence to occur on football fields. The public will be informed about the developments."

FIFA president Gianni Infantino took to Instagram to condemn the clash as “absolutely unacceptable,” and demanded Turkish authorities to hold the perpetrators to account. The AP reports that Turkish police have now detained 12 people after the incident.
