Chelsea pre-season training has been hit with news of a massive ACL injury to defender Wesley Fofana after he was left out of the group that travelled to the United States.

The defender has undergone surgery but is likely to only return late in the season if everything goes to plan in yet another injury setback for the 22-year-old.

He joined Chelsea last summer from Leicester on a long-term deal after impressing with the Foxes in his first year at the club.

His move to Chelsea has however been frustrating as he scored his debut goal in the Champions League before suffering a similar knee injury that ruled him out for four months against AC Milan.

He also broke his leg while at Leicester leading up to his Chelsea move but showed incredible strength to return and excelled towards the tail of the campaign.

Chelsea confirmed he had undergone surgery and was already on his way back to mending: “Defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery.

“The 22-year-old did not travel to America for the club’s pre-season tour due to specialist medical assessments, which unfortunately confirmed that an operation would be required.

“Wesley will now begin his recovery and work with the club’s medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.”

Having played twice for Leicester last season, the central defender made 15 appearances for Chelsea and five in the Champions League. His injury comes at a time when Chelsea are without Reece James, Armando Broja and Benoit Badiashile.
