The Argentine manager hopes they can now build a good run and confirmed Chilwell was injured in the win. He told reporters after the game: “Yes, we need to assess tomorrow but I think it is hamstring.”

Underfire striker Nicolas Jackson finally benefitted from playing with someone close to him and scored the club’s only goal this month with a close-smart finish to earn Chelsea the win.

Pochettino admitted he was happy for the 22-year-old as well as the entire squad: “Good response from the team, I was very pleased with the performance again and now happy for the victory and important to go through in the competition and build our trust and momentum. I hope we can bring this momentum to the future.

“[Jackson] Yes, very pleased, I think when the striker scores it is important. He needed to feel the net and important for him, very pleased for him.”

Cole Palmer who Chelsea signed for a reported fee of £45.2million looked electric in that second half and will now likely be in contention to start against Fulham.
