On-loan Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku has challenged Serie A to finally take a firm stand on segregation after he suffered racial abuse and was later sent off for reacting during Inter Milan’s 1-1 draw with Juventus on Tuesday night.

The 29-year-old was sent off for holding his finger on his lips after scoring a 95th-minute penalty to draw his side level against Juventus in Turin.

Through-out the game, the Belgian striker was abused and he responded by scoring a late equaliser and placing his finger on his lips in attempt to silence the home crowd.

The incident has drawn interest with Juventus, Inter Milan and Serie A all releasing statements to condemn the act.

But Lukaku has urged authorities to make this a watershed moment and finally put an end to racial abuse and all forms of segregation at football grounds.

He wrote on his Instagram page: “History repeats itself, through it in 2019 and 2023 again.

“This beautiful game should be enjoyed by everyone, I hope the league really takes action for real this time.”

Juventus have confirmed they will work closely with the police to identify the culprits and make sure they are adequately punished for their actions.

Lukaku joined Inter Milan on loan in the summer after a difficult first season at Chelsea where he scored 15 goals in all competitions, but just eight of them came in the league.

He is set to return to Chelsea in the summer with Inter Milan confirming they’re not willing to take up the option of extending his deal.

His future will be decided by the next Chelsea boss with the Blues looking at both Julian Nagelsmann and former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique.
