Chelsea ‘set’ for £14.6m transfer windfall to kick-start Graham Potter’s January window

Chelsea could spark their January transfer window to life with a solid windfall. The Blues spent big during the summer, and with little reward so far, sitting down in eighth in the Premier League table, and already on their second manager of the season. Graham Potter is hoping to turn things around, but he has a big task ahead, struggling to manage consistency ahead of the World Cup kicking off.

New signings may be required for Potter to put his own stamp on this squad, but the Blues board, even with the new-found riches at Stamford Bridge, may be reluctant to sanction huge deals again with little success on the pitch to back them up. In that vein, sales could important, and one player heading for the exit door is Hakim Ziyech.

Ziyech joined Chelsea for around £34million from Ajax in 2020, and things haven’t gone to plan for the Moroccan since. The attacking midfielder has made 51 league appearances, and he did win the Champions League with the club, but he hasn’t been able to nail down a regular starting spot. And according to Simon Phillips, it’s for that reason why he would like to leave the club ‘as soon as possible’.

“With Ziyech, he’s wanted to leave for a while, since the summer, since Tuchel was there. So, that’s the big difference with the other players we’ve been speaking about,” Phillips told GiveMeSport. “Ziyech has got a desire to actively leave Chelsea as soon as possible. So, Chelsea will be happy to listen to offers for him in January.”

Ziyech is currently valued at £14.6million by Transfermarkt, still under contract until 2025, and that could serve as a nice top-up of Potter’s budget heading into the January window, with talk of interest from AC Milan and beyond in Ziyech. For now, though, the player is away with Morocco at the World Cup, taking on Spain in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night.
