It took an own goal for Chelsea to get the better of West Ham at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea dispatched former manager Graham Potter and West Ham on Monday night but did it the hard way after going 1-0 down to their London rivals.

The clinical Jarrod Bowen didn’t need a second invitation when played through by a sloppy Levi Colwill pass, hitting the back of the net shortly before half time. Enzo Maresca turned to Pedro Neto after the break, who reinvigorated the Blues and found a leveller himself.

Cole Palmer had been quiet but is so often the man to change games, doing just that as his cross hit the back of the West Ham net via an Aaron Wan-Bissaka deflection. Here’s how the Chelsea players rated.

Chelsea player ratings

GK - Filip Jorgensen, 7

All eyes on him today given the situation surrounding Chelsea goalkeepers. Got down sharp to make an early save from a corner which settled some nerves but had Stamford Bridge groaning when failing to release on a break early in the second half.

LB - Marc Cucurella, 8

West Ham never quite worked out how to cope with his diagonal runs in from the flank. Played a key part in hooking the ball back for the Neto goal.

CB - Levi Colwill, 5

Pretty confident in general but that pass straight into Bowen’s path was criminal. You can’t do that as a centre-back.

CB - Tosin Adarabioyo, 8

Solid at centre-back, didn’t really seem troubled by Bowen through the middle. Made a vital block against Kudus on the break in added time.

RB - Reece James, 5

Still looks off the pace. Outsprinted embarrassingly by Carlos Soler early in the second half, earning a yellow for his attempts at trying to claw him back and was subbed shortly after.

CDM - Moises Caicedo, 8

A robust performance as the engine room for Chelsea. Often the most progressive player on the ball.

CDM - Enzo Fernandez, 6

Not his most influential night, drifting in and out of the game at times. Should have scored when played through by Madueke in the first half but was in the box to cause a problem for the Neto goal. Saw yellow for a nasty second half lunge.

LW - Jadon Sancho, 5

Couple nice moments when he found space but still lacking a final product, both with his finish and pass.

CAM - Cole Palmer, 8

Would have wanted to pull the strings more but always finds his moments of influence. Almost saw a first half corner creep into the top corner and put in the cross which went in off Wan-Bissaka. Ultimately, the match winner.

ST - Nicolas Jackson, 6

Didn’t provide a goal threat. His best work came when spinning on the break to knock through Noni Madueke early on. A tough night for him against an organised Hammers defence and hauled off early in the second half.

RW - Noni Madueke, 7

Had an early sighter when put through on the break by Jackson and probably should have done better to put the Blues in the lead. Looked like the player capable of finding some quality when others couldn’t for the Blues, which made his second half sub a surprise.

SUB - Marc Guiu, 4

Only had one real chance at scoring and found himself doing the splits rather than shooting when it came to him.

SUB - Pedro Neto, 9

Changed the game when he came on. Put in a dangerous cross which eventually fell back to him, from which he scored, to bring Chelsea level. A constant threat.

SUB - Malo Gusto, 7

Looked a more dynamic option than Reece James at full-back.

SUB - Christopher Nkunku, 5

The Chelsea win took away from a frustrating cameo. Found himself in good positions but guilty of slowing the game down a little.

SUB - Trevoh Chalobah, N/A
