Arsenal are hoping to add a new striker before Monday’s 11pm transfer deadline

David Seaman has urged Arsenal to sign a proven Premier League goalscorer before the transfer window shuts. The Gunners fired a defiant title message to league leaders Liverpool on Sunday as they dismantled reigning champions Manchester City 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

There were five different goalscorers for the North London side but former goalkeeper Seaman believes that a new striker is a must given the injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka. Jesus will not play again this season while Saka is expected to be out until March.

Arsenal have been linked with a number of forwards this month, including the likes of Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa and Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel - who is keen to leave the German club before the deadline.

Seaman weighs in on Arsenal striker search

Speaking to talkSPORT on Monday morning, Seaman stated his belief that Arsenal needed to sign a player like Watkins this window instead of a more unproven forward like Tel. The Gunners did see a £60m bid rejected by Aston Villa for the England international last week with reports the North London club were considering coming back with an improved offer. Although that has not happened as of yet.

Talking on talkSPORT Breakfast with Jeff Stelling & Ally McCoist, Seaman said: "When you lose someone like Jesus and then Bukayo as well, that is a lot of goals out of the team. I just think it [a new striker] would just add that extra boost to the squad.

"People are talking about Watkins and Tel, but he is not a proven goalscorer yet. He has not played in the Premier League, that one doesn't worry me but it will take him a while to get used to the Premier League. If you go for someone like Watkins, you are getting a proven goalscorer who has played in the Premier League for a long time. That is what Arsenal need, that little boost to what is already happening because what is already happening is fantastic."

Arsenal ‘in talks’ with Tel

In an earlier update, transfer correspondent Ben Jacobs told talkSPORT that Arsenal were holding talks on Monday morning over Tel. Premier League rivals Manchester United are also interested while North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur had a £50.2m deal agreed with Bayern Munich only for Tel to reject Spurs.

Bayern are said to want a permanent deal and have rebuffed two loan offers from Old Trafford. Our sister title Manchester World has reported that the Red Devils are unlikely to do business on deadline day - clearing the way for Arsenal to move for Tel.

Jacobs told talkSPORT: "Chelsea have Tel on their list as well and would like to sign him permanently. There was talk earlier in the window of [Christopher] Nkunku going the other way. Tel is concerned about his game time at Chelsea if he goes there. From Arsenal’s point of view, the advantage Tel has is that he’s a left winger, but he can also play up front. His versatility is an appeal to Arsenal and that’s why they have talks later this morning."
