Chelsea given hope of 'super' £25m January transfer move

Enzo Maresca is currently without Robert Sanchez following a red card against Manchester United.

Chelsea have been given hope of reigniting a transfer move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan this January as Enzo Maresca’s goalkeeping conundrum at Stamford Bridge continues.

The Blues manager had maintained his backing of Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen following a failed move for Maignan in the summer. That transfer attempt came prior to the Club World Cup with reports of a move for a new shot-stopper dying down after the competition.

Last season, Sanchez and Jorgensen were both guilty of high profile mistakes and it had been thought that neither would be deemed to be suitable for the number one spot under Maresca. The former was given that role this term but a foolish red card against Manchester United has highlighted the need for a reliable first choice once again.

Chelsea given hope over £25m Serie A transfer

Football Insider believes that Chelsea could move for Maignan once again when the January window opens. The London outfit failed to hit AC Milan’s £25 million asking price in the summer but, with the player’s contract expiring at the end of the season, the upcoming window is the last chance for the Serie A giants to cash in on the star.

The outlet cites Italian sources claiming that AC Milan could green light an immediate move to Chelsea in January in order to do just that. However, if AC Milan are still in with a chance of winning the title, that move could be called off.

AC Milan, who have not won the league title since 2022, have had a strong start to the season with three wins and one defeat so far. The club sits third in the table on nine points, just behind Juventus and Napoli.

Maignan labelled ‘Super Mike’ by Italian press

The Italian team have conceded just two goals this season and Maignan has impressed in between the sticks. After another clean sheet against Girona in the Champions League, Italian outfit Tuttosport labelled him ‘Super Mike’ having made two very big saves in that match.

Speaking about Sanchez’s red card against Manchester United last weekend, Maresca said: “It's the best solution, because we are still 95 minutes to play, I think even Robert is aware of that, but also it's difficult because he has to take a decision in one second or two seconds, so it's difficult. But if you ask me, I prefer to be one goal down after three minutes than one player down after three minutes.”
