Chelsea handed a potential boost as 33-year-old Newcastle star is now a 'major doubt' for Monday night

Kieran Trippier was forced off last weekend against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league.

Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier could now miss the game against Chelsea after scans revealed damage according to the Mail Online. The 33-year-old had earlier stated he was hoping to be ready for Monday Night's game.

He spoke at the North East Football Writers' Awards Dinner - where he was crowned Player of the Year - and said: "I just felt something in my calf and I don't want to take any risks or anything.

"I had a good chat with the manager but I won't know anything until [Monday]. My calf is feeling good but you know scan results can say anything, but most importantly I'm feeling positive."

The scans have now arrived and the England defender is now reportedly set to miss the game against Chelsea this weekend and the Manchester City FA Cup quarter-final one which comes after.

The England full-back has been a massive success since joining the club two seasons ago and his absence is a blow to manager Eddie Howe who is looking to end a challenging campaign on a high.

This season, Trippier has played in 25 league games, scored a goal and has 10 assists as well as playing in the Champions League.

The former Tottenham man is also a major doubt for England's friendlies against Brazil and Belgium later this month. There's a chance he could return for West Ham United's visit to St James' Park on Saturday, March 30. Chelsea could only draw against Brentford away at the weekend and will be looking for an instant response in front of their fans.
