Chelsea: Everything you need to know about Mason Mount’s contract situation

Chelsea are quietly optimistic that in-demand midfielder Mason Mount will sign a long term contract at the club after making a significant breakthrough in ongoing talks.

The England star’s future has been a topic for discussions in recent weeks with Manchester City, Liverpool and Bayern Munich all monitoring his situation.

Mount, born in Portsmouth, was one of the stars of the Champions League winning team last season, making nine assists and bagging nine goals across all competitions for the Blues.

What is the contract situation at the moment

Mount has been a key member of the Chelsea set-up since returning from a successful loan spell at Derby under Frank Lampard, during his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

His current contract runs out in 2024, that is two and half years from now, but Chelsea know they will have to offer a new deal that will keep the player happy and protect their investment.

He is currently one of the lowest paid players in the team, earning around £75,000 per week.

Why has contract talks dragged on for a while

There is no doubt that Mason Mount loves Chelsea and will be delighted to sign a new deal, but he wants to feel the love from the club.

His team want Chelsea to show he is valued by offering a deal in the same region as German duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz earn.

Mount is also aware that Callum Hudson-Odoi earns substantially more than even he does and would want the weekly pay cheques to reflect his performances on the pitch.

What are Chelsea saying about his demands

Chelsea value Mount and are very proud of how he’s developed from his early days at Cobham, via some loans, to establish him as a key first-team player.

They are also aware that Mount will exhaust all his options at Chelsea before listening to outside offers so they are not panicking at this stage.

However Chelsea’s hierachy have already had to watch on as Tammy Abraham left for Roma after feeling under-valued, and they wouldn’t like to lose another prospect.

The bosses at Stamford Bridge are silently accepting that Mount’s next deal will be huge, with a lot of clauses that will make him one of the club’s highest earners.

Mason Mount’s numbers at Chelsea

Last season, Mount provided the assist for Kai Havertz to score the all-important Champions League winner against Manchester City, helping Chelsea to the most important trophy in club football.

It was Frank Lampard who brought him back to Chelsea in 2019, and since then he has played in 120 games in all competitions scoring 20 and creating 17 goals, making him one of the best talents in European football.

England manager Gareth Southgate also heavily relied on him as the Three Lions reached the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley.
