Liverpool have outbid Chelsea and agreed a deal with Brighton for the signing of midfielder Moises Caicedo with the Ecuador international expected to undergo his medical later today.

Chelsea had been front runners for the 21-year-old all summer but did not want to pay £100million having already had to pay a similar fee for Enzo Fernandez. The Blues were also interested in Southampton’s Romeo Lavia but Southampton also want around £50million for his services.

Brighton held out an auction for the midfielder with Liverpool agreeing to pay a staggering £110million that surpassed the £100million Chelsea agreed to pay.

Personal terms are yet to be agreed between Caicedo and Liverpool, but are expected to be a formality now that the two clubs have agreed on the signing on fee.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino will hold his first Premier League press conference ahead of the game against Liverpool and is expected to face a lot of questions about Chelsea’s interest in Moises Caicedo given how strong the interest in the player has been all summer.

Chelsea have been long in need of a midfielder after the sale of Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante and also saw the departure of Ruben Loftus Cheek and Pulisic to AC Milan.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed the signing of the midfielder in his press conference. He said: “With the player, we will have to see. Medical today? I can’t tell you, I don’t know.” “We give it a go and the club have really stretched it, to be honest.”

Now Pochettino must deal with the questions of where else he will have to look to make up for the loss of the Ecuador international.
