Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, pundit Alan Shearer believes Chelsea are lacking a real ‘threat’ in attack after their 1-1 draw away at West Ham this weekend. The Blues took the lead through Atletico Madrid loanee Joao Felix before their former defender Emerson scored for the Hammers.

It has been well documented that Graham Potter’s side spent a lot of money in the January transfer window on the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Noni Madueke. However, they didn’t sign an out-and-out striker which is coming back to haunt them a bit now.

Chelsea are lacking that cutting edge up top, with Kai Havertz currently leading the line, and need to priorite bringing in someone in that position this summer. They are believed to be keen on Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

Shearer, who scored 379 goals in his career, has said: “They had 72% possession, made 654 passes to West Ham’s 241. Despite that, West Ham had more shots in the box, more touches in the box.

“Chelsea have a severe lack of a number nine and a threat. They need someone who is prepared to have that presence in the box and also run in behind, be that target man.”

He added: “They have spent an absolute fortune but not in a position where it is severely needed.”

Chelsea are back in action on Wednesday night with an away trip to Borrusia Dortmund in the Champions League. They then have struggling Southampton at home next weekend.

The Saints go into that game bottom of the table. They have also sacked their boss Nathan Jones after their loss to Wolves yesterday.
