Charlton Athletic picked up three points on the first day of the League One season with a victory on the road at Wigan Athletic.
There were questions over how the Addicks would cope having flogged last season's League One top goalscorer Alfie May to Birmingham City, but Jones has recruited well this summer. One of those incomings is Gassan Ahadme, who was involved early on.
The 23-year-old's physicality saw him push past the Wigan Athletic defence to bundle a ball over into the path of fellow newbie Greg Docherty, who perhaps should have done better as he failed to get the ball unstuck from between his feet.
Despite the early scare, it was the hosts who seized control in the match, managing a few half chances as Charlton stayed organised - a distance shot deflecting off Alex Mitchell the biggest momentary scare for Will Mannion.
Wigan's best moments came through Norwegian youngster Thelo Aasgaard, who proved a handle for the London outfit, a tasty strike from the edge of the box and a free kick shortly before the break two highlights.
Having looked so lively, there's likely no one that Latics supporters would rather have seen the ball fall to in the Charlton box after half-time than Aasgaard but the forward hesitated and allowed Kayne Ramsay to slide in with a perfectly calculated intervention.
Really, it was a typical Jones performance as a resilient Charlton side never really looked likely to break under Wigan pressure. Chances to score were few and far between for the Addicks, but when substitute Tennai Watson lobbed a ball forward and into the path of Lloyd Jones, the centre-back was clinical and fired home to make it 1-0.
It may not have been vintage, but it's the type of performance that will have Nathan Jones beaming so early on in the season with its determination and organisation. Here's how the Charlton Athletic players rated.

1. Will Mannion - 8
A strong debut showing for the shot-stopper, who had to be on his toes all afternoon. Was calm and organised when dealing with some testing corners and will be happy with his outing. | Getty Images

2. Macauly Gillesphey - 7
A disciplined showing as he helped Charlton soak up pressure. | Getty Images

3. Lloyd Jones - 8
There when needed and not made to look uncomfortable by the Latics. Fired home clinically with less than 10 minutes on the clock to cap off a resounding performance. | Getty Images

4. Alex Mitchell - 7
A full-hearted debut showing. Had drawn blood from himself after just 12 minutes but soldiered on after treatment. | Getty Images
