Charlton Athletic midfielder targeted by League Two outfit

Charlton Athletic midfielder Jack Payne is expected to return to MK Dons this summer when he is released from the London club.

The 29-year-old has been on loan at the League Two outfit this season and played a key part in helping the side to the play-offs. Payne, who played three times for the Addicks in League One at the start of the season, went on to make 40 appearances on loan in League Two.

The Real EFL now reports that MK Dons are 'keen' to sign the player on a permanent basis when he becomes a free agent at the end of next month. Charlton signed Payne from Swindon Town in 2022 and he has made 54 appearances for the club in total.

He told the Leyton Orient media team: "It's a playing contract that I've signed, there's no secret I want to go into coaching after playing.

"This could be my last year as a player so, if I don't find myself in the squad, I'll be taking some sessions. I've got good coaches around me and they are all helping me progress. If I don't manage to get a shirt, I'll be doing the extra coaching, but my main focus is to push for a shirt this season."

Birmingham City plot Leeds United swoop

Birmingham City have joined the race to sign Leeds United defender Luke Ayling on a free transfer when his deal at Elland Road expires this summer.

The 32-year-old has been playing on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship this season and had previously admitted that he was 'close' to agreeing a deal with the North East side for next term. However, there is yet to be confirmation and the Northern Echo reports that the Blues could swoop for the player to add experience to the squad ahead of a drop to League One next season.
