Charlton Athletic teen courted by Champions League-chasing Premier League club

The former Everton youngster had been linked with a Championship side and now a Premier League outfit is reported to have registered interest.

Charlton Athletic defender Thierry Small is reported to be a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur this summer after an impressive second half of the season at The Valley.

The former Everton youngster joined Charlton in February and went on to make 14 League One appearances for the side as Nathan Jones put together a hugely impressive unbeaten run. Small, who previously became Everton's youngest player in club history when handed an FA Cup debut at 16 years old, is just 19 years old with a bright future ahead of him.

Charlton are aware of the player's talent and have triggered an additional year in Small's short-term contract to keep him at the club. The Addicks have also offered the defender a long-term deal to ensure he stays as part of Jones' plans - but either extension would not rule out a summer sale if an irresistible bid came in.

Tottenham Hotspur are known to be in the market for new defenders this summer, having shipped 59 goals in the Premier League so far this season - Spurs are believed to be losing out to Newcastle United on two of those defensive targets.

Speaking about Small's future at the club, as well as other out of contract players, Jones previously said: “What we won’t do is get rid of good players. We’ll protect good players – if Thierry falls into that then Thierry will be looked after.

“I’ve been really pleased. Obviously, I know Thierry from Southampton. He had a bit of a tough time – a big-money move as a teenager when he came to Southampton.

"Sometimes you have a little bit of a plateau before you can go again. We hope that is it for Thierry. He is a great kid – a fantastic athlete. He needs some polishing around the edges – but so do most teenagers.

"We have to respect he is still very, very young. But I’ve been really pleased with him. Thierry is one of the 20-odd players that have just given me everything and opened up their mentality."

Small himself had shared his desire to stay at the club, saying that he could "100%" see himself playing football at The Valley next season. Newly promoted Championship outfit Derby County are also said to be interested in a move for the defender.
