Youri Tielemans to Arsenal: Contract situation and future hints amid Leicester City contract stalemate
The 24-year-old is one of a number of names who have been linked with the Gunners ahead of the summer transfer window, with Mikel Arteta set to further add to his squad following the conclusion of the current Premier League season.
But is Tielemans a viable option, and where do discussions over his future currently stand? We take a look:
Youri Tielemans’ contract situation at Leicester City
Tielemans remains under contract at the King Power Stadium beyond the end of the current campaign, with his deal at Leicester City running until the end of the 2022/23 season.
But with just 18 months remaining on that agreement - and with fresh terms yet to be agreed - there are a number of clubs on red alert.
Recent reports had suggested that Tielemans had turned down a contract offer from the Foxes - but Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has denied that is the case.
“He hasn’t declined [a new deal],” he said, speaking to Sky Sports.
“For me his position is exactly the same as what it was.
“He’s a fantastic player and there’s been no movement whatsoever, he’s a player who has continued to work and is working well.
“Till the last day he’s here whether that’s at the end of the contract or summer or beyond that, he will always give his best because he’s a top professional and he showed his commitment today.
“There’s interest trying to be generated by other people.”
Who is interested in Youri Tielemans?
A host of clubs from across Europe have been linked with a move for Tielemans.
As well as Arsenal, Premier League duo Manchester United and Liverpool have also been credited with an interest.
Italian giants Juventus are also reported to be keen.
What have Leicester City said about his future?
When quizzed recently on whether he was confident that Tielemans would pledge his future to the Foxes, Rodgers remained coy.
“I don’t know either way,” he said.
“My job is to help him as a player, and improve him as a player. Otherwise, it’s between his agent and the club.”
What has Youri Tielemans said about his future?
Speaking in September 2021, Tielemans said he was ‘open to everything’ in regards to his future.
“There’s no update really. I’m open to everything,” he said, speaking to Sky Sports.
“The transfer market has just closed, but I want to keep as many options as I can open.
“As long as I’m here I will give everything for the club. I’ve already done so, but I will do so even more. The contract situation is just something that is going on in football, it’s a normal situation.”
