An erroneous VAR call, committed earlier in the season, could have handed Arsenal a major title boost over their rivals.

Arsenal have recently been the beneficiaries of an erroneous refereeing call, as revealed by the most recent Premier League Key Match Incidents report. Back on March 9, the Gunners defeated Brentford by a score of 2-1 - but it should not have been allowed to play out.

The winning goal of the contest was scored by Kai Havertz, who found the back of the Bees' net in the 86th minute. Nevertheless, a review of the game has indicated that the German international should have been sent off before his late strike gave Arsenal all three points.

A statement issued by a review panel who looked at the incident reads [via The Times]: "Havertz is already falling when the defender makes contact, brushing Havertz’s hip. The panel unanimously agreed the on-field decision was incorrect and Havertz should have been awarded a second caution for a ‘clear act of simulation'."

Could this VAR call hand Arsenal the Premier League title?

Of course, there are plenty of other factors to consider before Gunners fans can break out the champagne. The call in the Brentford game may have given Arsenal an extra two points, but it is still all to play for at the top of the Premier League table.

The Gunners still have some massive games to play in the league this season. With ten games left to go, Mikel Arteta's men are still set to take on outfits such as Aston Villa, Manchester City, Manchester United and bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur. They are hitting form at the business end of the campaign, but can they maintain it in such difficult fixtures?

Ultimately, football is a game of fine margins. It is not uncommon to see a refereeing mistake cost a team points - but it is disappointing to see it happen with the level of technology at the disposal of officials.
