There will be nine Premier League midweek games this week but there is one glaring omission with league leaders Arsenal and champions Manchester City not in action.

This week should have seen Pep Guardiola’s star studded side take on Mikel Arteta’s team, but that game was postponed and now the wait continues, not that Arsenal are complaining as they will still be top of the pile regardless of what happens elsewhere.

Manchester City though lost to Liverpool over the weekend and would have loved to get back straight at it- but as it stands, they will have the midweek off and look to get back winning ways against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.

Had the game been played this week as initially scheduled- it would have been a clash between first place against second in the league table, a meeting between Pep Guardiola and his former assistant with whom they won a lot at Manchester City.

Why the game had to be postponed

The main reason why the game against Manchester City was postponed stemmed from the passing of Queen Elizebeth II, as policing issues at games became almost impossible as more resources were channelled toward ensuring the Queen enjoyed a proper send off.

Arsenal had to first postpone their game against PSV and they did so knowing they could risk forfeiting and losing the three points and three goals- but thankfully for the Gunners, discussions with UEFA  led to a new date which was October 20th.

The new date however meant that the Arsenal vs Manchester City game will take the hit and even though the Citizens were not happy there was little they could do about it.

The Premier League were open to accommodating Arsenal’s request to move the City game to allow them fulfil their European commitment.

When will the Manchester City game take place

The Premier is yet to find a date for this fixture so everything could change by the time they do find a date time as games continue to rain in.

This season  is quite unique in that there is the World Cup and teams have to play at least six games from now till when they break for the tournament to be staged in Qatar.  There are also always European games, Carabao Cup and the FA Cup fixtures so realistically any date will be after the World Cup.
