Fresh Premier League title hopes and final points forecast for Liverpool and Arsenal after Aston Villa result
Aston Villa drew with Arsenal’s title rivals Liverpool on Wednesday night at Villa Park.
Arsenal received a major boost in their Premier League title chances this week as rivals Liverpool dropped points against Aston Villa on Wednesday night.
The Reds took the lead via Mo Salah, before Youri Tielemans equalised in the 38th minute. Following that, Ollie Watkins, who Arsenal tried to sign in January, put Villa ahead just before halftime. Liverpool did manage to find an equaliser through Trent Alexander-Arnold, and if it weren’t for VAR ruling it offside, Villa would have won the game thanks to a Jacob Ramsey goal.
The match finished 2-2, and left Liverpool eight points ahead of Arsenal, with the Gunners having a game in hand. If Arsenal were to win that, the gap would be just five points.
Arsenal play against West Ham this weekend, whereas Liverpool face a game against Manchester City who just got knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid.
Arsenal’s title chances boost after Liverpool draw
According to Opta, Liverpool previously had an 87.65% chance of winning the Premier League title this season. Arsenal’s was previously 12.35% before Wednesday night’s draw at Villa Park. Now in Opta’s latest full season simulation, Liverpool are still expected to win the league title, but on a total of 87 points, seven ahead of rivals Arsenal who are predicted to finish second.
However, Liverpool’s title chances have decreased slightly, as the fresh simulation has the Reds with a 84.73% of winning the title in Arne Slot’s first season. Whereas Arsenal have a 15.19% chance of winning, a slight increase that will give Gunners’ fans cause to be optimistic.
The only other team that the supercomputer gives any chance of winning the league is Manchester City, with a 0.08% chance. It predicts that Pep Guardiola’s side will finish third, whereas the Champions League places (likely top five), are completed with Nottingham Forest and Chelsea. If Arsenal can win on Saturday against West Ham, it would heap even more pressure on Liverpool who will play on Sunday afternoon against City at the Etihad Stadium.
Arne Slot unhappy with Aston Villa draw
After the game on Wednesday night which saw Liverpool’s title chances decrease slightly, manager Arne Slot was not happy with the result, and says that the score line wasn’t a fair reflection of the game.
He said in his post-match interview with BBC Sport: “I'm not happy with 2-2. I wasn't happy at all being 2-1 down at half-time, it didn't reflect the first half at all.
“The only reason why we could be happy with the 2-2 was they got the last chance of the game, maybe their third after scoring two. That could be the only reason where we could say a point is good to take.”
The Reds did have a chance to win the game as striker Darwin Nunez missed an open goal after midfielder Dominik Szobozslai passed the ball across the box to leave Nunez embarrassed as he skied the ball over the bar.
