Paul Merson issues verdict on Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal deal as transfer slammed
Arsenal are about to complete the signing of Gabriel Jesus and two former players have issued their verdicts on the transfer.
The Gunners came into this transfer window knowing they had to strengthen up top, with Alexandre Lacazette leaving at the end of the season, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also left in the winter without being replaced.
Arsenal also have the added commitment of the Europa League in the coming campaign, so adding the experienced goalscorer is a shrewd move.
The Gunners have taken advantage of City’s signing of Erling Haaland to pull off a £50million deal, with the official announcement due any moment.
“I like what Arsenal have done to get that over the line,” he said.
“I think they’re in for a good season. There’s a project going on and they’ll be fighting for fourth place with Man United and Tottenham.
“If they can get into the Champions League and have a good cup run - the Europa is winnable - with the squad they’re building they’ve got a chance of getting some silverware this season.”
Meanwhile, former City star Ditemar Hamann can’t believe his former side would sanction a deal, even with the arrival of Haaland.
“Pep Guardiola is making a mistake by letting Gabriel Jesus leave; Erling Haaland has had his injury problems and the Premier League is a very physical league,” he told Genting Casino.
“If you look at Gabriel Jesus’ stats, they’re brilliant. He’s scored a lot of goals for them, so I’m surprised he’s been allowed to leave.”
Both former players clearly see Jesus’ value, and there’s no doubting Arsenal will instantly look stronger after this signing is completed.
The Gunners can also count on Eddie Nketiah for next season, with the youngster penning a new deal following a fine end to the season.
