Arsenal Women thrash Tottenham Hotspur in front of record WSL crowd

Arsenal Women hosted Tottenham Hotspur Women in the WSL on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal Women have cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur Women in a thrilling North London derby.

It was a brilliant afternoon for the Gunners as well as women’s football, as a record-breaking 47,367 fans flocked to the Emirates Stadium for their second Women’s Super League match of the season.

It only took five minutes for Beth Mead to open the scoring for the home side, before Rafaelle Souza and a brace from Vivianne Miedema confirmed an important three points to take them top of the league.

The success of England Women at this year’s Euros tournament has dramatically increased the popularity of the sport and Arsenal fans won’t have been left disappointed as they broke the previous WSL record set in the reverse fixture three years ago.

Following the win in North London, Mead heaped praise on the crowd.

Speaking to BBC One on the reception she received, the striker said: “It was ridiculous.”

Mead was awarded the Golden Boot, the Player of the Tournament and Top Assist Provider at the Euros this summer and has now become an fans’ favourite as she has returned to Arsenal.

The Gunners now have a trip to Amsterdam as they take on Ajax in the Champions League before facing Reading in another WSL fixture next month.
