Manchester City boss Pep Guardiol has been speaking after his side were thrashed by Arsenal.

Pep Guardiola has been speaking after his side were handed another big defeat, this time by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners made easy work of City on Sunday, romping to a 5-1 win thanks to goals Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, Kai Havertz, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, with the latter two being the pick of the bunch. The result means Arsenal do not lose any ground on leaders Liverpool, still six points behind with a game in hand.

Meanwhile, City could drop out of the top four should Chelsea beat West Ham on Monday night, and their season continues to be a bumpy one amid a relentless search for consistency.

On the back of the result, City boss Guardiola has issued his verdict, and he told the BBC: “We are not used to that. Other results, this team has grown up. We allowed the space we wanted to avoid, the space in between the lines, that's why we have the feeling at home.

"We have done 60 minutes really good. I know Arsenal here, the amount of chances they created. We didn't create much. We didn't away give a lot for Havertz, didn't' give away from set pieces. But the last 20 minutes we were found out."

The Spaniard added: "I only regret the last 25 minutes, we forgot to do what we should do, what we have done for 65/70 minutes. Of course it's a difficult game starting in this stadium, against that team in the first minutes it's happened many times this season.

"But after 10/15 minutes I think we took the game and played really, really, really, really good and we are in it after 1-1 and good momentum we pass to make the transition with Omar [Marmoush] and a deflection and the third goal.

"But after that, we then continued to do what you have to do in terms defensively and [be a] little bit more patient. and when you're playing that way they can run and of course at 3-1 they are comfortable, its more difficult. I regret the last 15/20 minutes, the rest was a really good game for our side. It's difficult to understand when you see the result but this is my feeling.

"It's happened all season, we are giving away too many things, we are aware this cannot happen, it happened. But we reacted really well and we played with personality and we defended so good and then with the ball we were a threat but unfortunately after the second happened, again many times we had the momentum. For the deflection and in other situations we conceded the goals. You have to overcome [it], you cannot lose the control, it's 90/95 minutes. You cannot finish in the way we played, we could've scored three more but the team has to be stable it doesn't matter what happened.”

What the pundits said

Gary Neville said on Sky Sports after the game: “It’s so important Arsenal made a statement today and they’ve done just that. Mikel Arteta has to get that intensity and tempo from the last 30 minutes for the rest of the season. Hang in there. Be there if Liverpool fall.”

Meanwhile, Gunners legend Thierry Henry added: “When they play like that they're difficult to stop. Let’s enjoy it – it [beating City like that] doesn’t happen often. Liverpool are still six points ahead with a game in hand. Let’s carry on working the way we did in the last 30 minutes.”

Jamie Carragher said: “Great day for Arsenal. We said before they were still lacking statement results a title winner would have. But going down to 10 men against Wolves and winning, and demolishing the champions in a game that looked in the balance.

“Arsenal looked a completely different team once it got to 2-1. They’re going to need that if they’re going to wrestle that title back. As soon as the game got faster Man City can’t cope with it.”
