Arsenal are planning a substantial transfer move to sign striker Tammy Abraham from Italian side Roma this summer, according to a report by The Star.

The England international, 24, has scored 24 goals for Jose Mourinho’s side in his debut Serie A season and could be the player that the Gunners target to fill the void left by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s exit earlier this year.

The striker won’t be leaving the Stadio Olimpico for a small fee though and that is why the North London club are said to be preparing a “lucrative” package with a transfer fee of £50m.

Here is everything you need to know about Abraham’s season away from the Premier League as well as what is being reported about a potential move to the Emirates Stadium.

Abraham’s stock on the rise after Chelsea exit

Abraham spent his entire youth career at the Blues and was with the Stamford Bridge club from 2004 to 2021.

He made his senior debut in the 2015/16 Premier League season and made one more appearance before going out on loan.

His first spell away from Chelsea was to Bristol City in the EFL Championship where he scored an impressive 23 goals in 41 games during the 2016/17 season.

His next move came the following season where he got his first chance at regular Premier League football with Swansea City as he netted five goals in 31 appearances.

The striker would end up returning to the second tier for the 2018/19 campaign when he joined Aston Villa and once again found the back of the net on a frequent basis as he scored 25 goals in 37 games with Villa eventually earning promotion via the play-offs.

After three seasons away from Stamford Bridge the forward was finally given his chance in the Chelsea first team under Frank Lampard in the 2019/20 season.

He scored 15 goals in 34 games but found both game time and goals harder to come by in the 2020/21 campaign as he managed to find the back of the net six times in 22 appearances.

After that the player was allowed to leave with Chelsea receiving a transfer fee of £34 million as he joined Roma on a five year contract.

The Blues are also reported to have a buy back clause of £68 million but that can only be triggered after his second full season with the Italian side.

He has impressed in the Serie A and Europe for Jose Mourinho’s side this campaign, scoring a total of 24 goals in all competitions.

As reported by The Star, “Arsenal are set to renew their interest in former Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham during the summer transfer window following his 24-goal debut season under Jose Mourinho at Roma”.

The publication also claims that Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta was “desperate” to sign the striker last summer before he opted for the move to Roma.

It is said that, at that time, Roma offered the player a better wage package and guaranteed regular game time in the first team - something the player “couldn’t refuse”.

If Arsenal can secure Champions League football for next season then they will be prepared to offer Roma £50m to bring the England international back to the Premier League.
