The England international has caught the attention of several European giants

Arsenal have been told by a former player to sign England international and former Manchester United star Angel Gomes. According to ex-Gunners star Lee Dixon, Gomes would make a ‘superb’ acquisition for the Emirates club and with his contract at Ligue 1 side Lille up next summer, it could be a perfect time to make a move for him.

The 24-year-old had been part of Man United’s youth academy and left the Red Devils in 2020 on a free to transfer to Lille. He spent a year on loan with Boavista in Portugal before returning to Ligue 1 and over the past few months has quickly become one of the most exciting midfield prospects in Europe.

After representing England at youth levels, winning the Under-17s World Cup and the Under-21s European Championships, Gomes’ senior debut came this year against the Republic of Ireland and he has since paired up well with Declan Rice in midfield in his subsequent two displays for the Three Lions, catching the eye of former N7 defender Dixon.

Dixon made over 450 league appearances for the Gunners from 1988-2002 winning three FA Cups, two Premier League titles and the 1994 European Cup Winners’ Cup. As reported by Football London, the north London icon has said that the potential for a Rice-Gomes link-up at the Emirates could be too good to miss.

“I think Angel Gomes would fit in at Arsenal superbly”, Dixon said. “His qualities are clear to see, he’s a very good link-up player and we’ve seen that he can play alongside Declan Rice. He’s got a lot of potential and although there will be plenty of clubs looking at him, I could see him at Arsenal next season.”

Whether Arsenal take up Dixon’s advice is yet to be seen but what is known is that there is already set to be quite the heated battle for Gomes’s signature. Two days ago GiveMeSport reported that Aston Villa were the latest club to join the race which already sees the midfielder’s former club Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United competing. Gomes is out of contract this summer as things stand and can be snapped up on a free transfer if he does not agree a new deal with Lille.
