Arsenal in 'advanced talks' over deal that could unlock Raheem Sterling transfer agreement

Arsenal are now said to be in ‘advanced talks’ over a key departure on deadline day.

Arsenal are said to be in ‘advanced talks’ with another Premier League club as they look to shift another unwanted player. The Gunners have done a good job of shifting their unwanted players this summer, with Emile Smith Rowe, Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Sambi Lakonga and others leaving in one way or another.

Mikel Arteta still has unwanted players before Friday night’s 11pm deadline, though, with Reiss Nelson and Kieran Tierney the players who stand out as current stars who are unlikely to see regular football this season, while Eddie Nketiah is Crystal Palace-bound on a £30million deal.

Tierney looks unlikely to leave with no club likely to sign a player in the midst of a hamstring injury. The Scot would not pass a medical and his injury history means clubs are not likely to take a chance on him.

But the case could be very different for Nelson, who looks likely to depart on loan before the window slams shut. A number of Premier League clubs have been linked with a late move for the wideman, including Crystal Palace, but it now looks as though newly promoted Ipswich Town will wrap up a deal.

Fabrizio Romano has tweeted: “EXCL: Ipswich Town in advanced talks to sign Reiss Nelson on loan from Arsenal! It can open the doors to Raheem Sterling to Arsenal from Chelsea.”

Nelson has made 50 league appearances for Arsenal in all since breaking into the first team in 2017, although he has had two loan spells since then. The winger is now 24 years of age and will be looking to kick on with regular football.

Attention to turn to Sterling

Arsenal are said to be chasing a deal for Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling but it is a deal that could go right to the wire. Sterling is not wanted at Chelsea, but only a loan deal is likely to be struck at this late stage.

The Gunners are only likely to move for Sterling if they can offload Nelson, wanting to ease the wage burden before committing to at least a large chunk of Sterling’s more than £300-per-week wages, while also making sure they don’t have a bloated squad by signing a winger while having to keep Nelson who, while he may not be title-winning standard, has shown he can still do a job when called upon.
