Arsenal transfer news: Arsenal ‘hold talks’ with ex-Gunner, Chelsea player ‘wanted’ by Leicester City and Southampton

Arsenal are now closing in on the signing of Manchester City star Gabriel Jesus, and Paul Merson has had his say.

The Gunners came into this transfer window knowing they had to strengthen up top, with Alexandre Lacazette leaving at the end of the season, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also left in the winter without being replaced.

Mikel Arteta needs more fire power up top if his side are going to go one better than the season just gone to reach the Champions League.

Arsenal also have the added commitment of the Europa League in the coming campaign, so adding the experienced goalscorer is a shrewd move.

The Gunners have taken advantage of City’s signing of Erling Haaland to pull off a £50million deal, with the official announcement due any moment.

And former Gunner turned Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is very impressed.

“I like what Arsenal have done to get that over the line,” he said.

“I think they’re in for a good season. There’s a project going on and they’ll be fighting for fourth place with Man United and Tottenham.

“If they can get into the Champions League and have a good cup run - the Europa is winnable - with the squad they’re building they’ve got a chance of getting some silverware this season.”
