England manager Gareth Southgate ruffled feathers on Tuesday when announcing his initial squad for this summer's Euro 2024 competition. Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle United stars are all left out of a new-look side heading into preparations for the tournament.
Some of those snubs are less surprising than others given injuries and form this season but, 12 months ago, many of the Premier League first-team stars would have been blocking out the weeks in their calendar to prepare for the international competition.
LondonWorld looks at just 11 of the players absent from the England squad to make up a pretty phenomenal starting XI that, according to Transfermarkt, has an eye-watering worth of £349 million.

5. RB - Reece James, £43m
Managed just 10 Premier League appearances due to injury this season. Returned with three matches to play and a chance to impress but picking up a red card on the final day of the campaign summed up a season to forget for him. | Getty Images

6. LM - Marcus Rashford, £51m
It's been a poor season for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United and he's not on the plane to Germany as a result. It seems criminal that a player of his talent isn't in the squad, but that ability has been far too hit and miss this term. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

7. CM - Kalvin Phillips, £24m
Kalvin Phillips' absence is perhaps not a huge surprise given that his loan move to West Ham over the back end of the season was hugely underwhelming. It'll still hurt though - even when struggling at club level he had maintained Southgate's backing previously. | Getty Images

8. Morgan Gibbs-White, £34m
The Nottingham Forest midfielder has sparkled this season despite his team's form. A driving force, five goals and 10 assists in the league wasn't enough to earn him a senior England debut. | Getty Images
