The 13-time Premier League champions are believed to have submitted a £43million move for Martinez and are confident they can complete a deal before the start of the new season.

Ajax are said to be demanding around £50million for their prized asset - and the Mirror have revealed Martinez’s team-mates believe their stubbornness could force the centre-back to refuse to train in a bid to force a move.

Arsenal are also reportedly keen as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his defensive ranks - although the report states Martinez has made it clear he wants to move to Old Trafford and is ‘urging’ Ajax to agree a deal over the coming days.

L’Equipe have claimed the Brazilian international has asked to leave the Ligue 1 club this summer and stated Lyon will not stand in his way if a suitable offer is received.

French outlet Media Foot claimed Newcastle have launched a £33million bid for the attacking midfielder but there have also been reports Arsenal are ‘pushing hard’ to beat their Premier League rivals to his signature.

A figure of over £40million could be needed to tempt the highly-rated star to the Premier League as Mikel Arteta looks to add a fifth Brazilian star to his squad following the summer signing of Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus.
