Alan Shearer slams Arsenal player for what he did during dramatic 4-3 win over Luton

Newcastle United and Premier League legend Alan Shearer had some harsh criticism for David Raya following a pair of mistakes he made in Arsenal's dramatic 4-3 victory over Luton Town on Tuesday evening.

With the Gunners leading 2-1 early in the second half, Raya came for a cross but was easily beaten by Elijah Adebayo in the air as the Luton man's header trickled into the net.

Following the game, Shearer said: "It's the obsession with having a footballing goalkeeper these days where you forget the fundamentals of shot stopping and collecting a cross. Raya never looks comfortable from the cross. It's a huge error from the goalkeeper."

Raya then saw Ross Barkley's shot squeeze under his body as Luton took the lead but Arteta brushed off criticism of Raya's performance, reiterating that he was happy with the overall performance of his side. He said: "It's part of the job, but I'm really happy with the team so let's move on."

Should Aaron Ramsdale be given a run of games following Raya's error?

Dropping a player after a mistake - especially a goalkeeper - can be a rash decision, as it often has major consequences on the player's confidence. However, Arteta has done this before - Aaron Ramsdale started the season in poor form, which led to him being dropped for Raya.

As such, the Gunners head coach may be forced to do the same thing to Raya in the interest of fairness and consistency. If he does not, he may be accused of favouritism - which could have ramifications on the atmosphere of the dressing room.

Both Ramsdale and Raya are superlatively talented goalkeepers, but both have proven that they are not immune to errors. It makes sense to adopt a policy of rotation with the two - but, as has been mentioned in the past, it could be difficult to keep them both happy by doing this. They are both good enough to command a permanent spot in the first team and they could seek this elsewhere if it is not given to them at Arsenal.
