Arsenal make release clause 'decision' after walking away from transfer
All the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding Arsenal as they look to land an attacker on deadline day.
Arsenal now turn their attention to Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup date with Newcastle United, going into that one two goals down on aggregate. The Gunners will go into it after putting five past Manchester City, though, so they will have plenty of belief they can turn the tie around and secure a Wembley final.
Before then, Arsenal have deadline day and an 11pm deadline to beat as they look to snap up a forward. Here we round up all the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding the Emirates Stadium.
Williams claim
With negotiations over Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel still in the air, Arsenal are reportedly prepared to meet the release clause in Nico Williams’ Athletic Club contract. According to Football Transfers, the Tel deal could be about to break down because of Bayern’s financial demands.
It’s claimed Arsenal could now move to sign Williams early having previously been linked with a summer deal. Williams’ release clause is £48.2million, but it must be paid upfront. Meanwhile, Arsenal would also have to convince Williams to leave after he told Athletic Club he would be staying until the summer.
Tel deal dying out
Sky Sports have provided a little more detail on the Tel deal and why Arsenal may be walking away from a deal. The Sky Sports News report read: “We’ve got some more breaking news just into us and Arsenal are unlikely to follow up their interest in the Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel as things stand, they explored the conditions of a deal in the window.
“Sky in Germany report that Bayern are insisting on a loan with an obligation or a permanent deal. Arsenal, though, will work until the final second to try and improve the squad on deadline day. That’s what we’re hearing. A forward remains a priority that Mikel Arteta is insisting it has to be the right player.”
Arteta on deadline day
Mikel Arteta says his phone had been off in the build up to the City game, despite being likely to spring into action today as the Gunners look to add an attacker.
He said after the City win: “I don’t know, my phone has been off with the transfer window, forbidden to call me, text me about any of that. My focus is that we have the best preparation we can have for Wednesday and that was the only thing I was interested in.”
