The West Ham midfielder, 23, from Kingston upon Thames, missed training on Wednesday due to illness ahead of the England squad’s World Cup quarter-final against France, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Despite having been a crucial part of the Three Lions midfield during the football competition in Qatar, his absence from training has thrown his attendance this weekend in doubt.

Rice has started all four of England’s matches in Qatar, but his absence at the Al Wakrah Sports Complex makes it unclear whether it will affect his availability as they head into the last eight of the World Cup.

The England squad is already without their forward Raheem Sterling and their defender Ben White, who both returned home for personal reasons.

The rest of the squad, which is now down to 22-men, seemed to train without any issues as they prepared for what is meant to be their toughest game of the tournament, so far.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford told The Daily Mail: “We know it’s going to be a tough game. But it’s World Cup football. You’ve got to relish these moments. You’ve got to take every chance you get. You might not get another chance to beat France.”
