What is a census?

According to the Office for National Statistics, “The census happens every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales.

Your answers to census questions help organisations make decisions on planning and funding public services in your area, including transport, education and healthcare.”

How is the census data used?

The census, primarily is used to track the population, but gives key data that can “build a detailed snapshot of our society. Information from the census helps the government and local authorities to plan and fund local services, such as education, doctors’ surgeries and roads”.
