TUC march in London: what route will the rally take, what is the weather forecast and why are they protesting?

The march comes days before the rail and London Tube strike.

Tens of thousands of people from all over the country are taking part in a cost of living march organised by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in London.

Protesters were asked to begin forming up at Portland Place at 10.30am.

What route will the march take?

The march will leave Portland Place at 12pm, heading down Regent Street, before turning on to Haymarket and through Trafalgar Square, onto Whitehall before ending in Parliament Square for the rally.

How long is the route?

The route the protesters will take is 1.7 miles long.

What’s the weather forecast?

The Met Office forecast for the centre of London for next few hours is cloudy with a chance of rain.

It’s also expected to remain quite warm with temperatures peaking at 25°C between 2pm and 3pm.

Why are they marching?

The march is called ‘We Demand Better’ and has been organised by the TUC.

“Working people have had enough,” said the TUC.

“Everything’s going up but our wages.

“Ministers partied while people died. They did nothing while P&O lays off hundreds of workers on the spot. And they dithered and delayed whilst living standards plummeted.”

The TUC added: “It’s time for a new deal for working people. We need help with energy bills and a real pay rise for every worker.

“Let’s take matters into our own hands – and get out on the streets.”

What are the protesters’ demands?

  • Respect and security for all workers - ban zero hours contracts, ban fire and rehire, decent sick pay now.
  • End racism at work.
  • Tax energy profits to pay our bills.
  • Raise universal credit.
  • Boost union bargaining rights now.

Who will be speaking at the rally?

Frances O’Grady, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress of UK, is expected to give the keynote speech at the rally in Parliament Square.

Yes. The rally will be streamed live via the TUC Facebook page at 1.15pm.
