Monday April 8: Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express, South Western Railway main line and depot drivers, and SWR Island Line

National Rail has warned customers that during the full strike days there is likely to be little or no service across large areas of the network operated by the affected train companies.

Services are likely to be disrupted and start later on the day immediately following a full strike day. On days where an overtime ban is in place, the timetable for some train companies may be revised in advance or services subject to short-notice delay or cancellation on the day.

National Rail has asked passengers to check before they travel during the strike action.

Aslef members working on the London Underground are set to walk out on Monday April 8 and Saturday May 4.

TfL says it expects “little or no service” on the London Underground during the upcoming strike days.

TfL says it will operate as much of the network as possible, but it is currently expecting the following service if the strike goes ahead:

  • Monday April 8 - severe disruption is expected, with little or no service expected on some lines.
  • Tuesday April 9 - Tube services will start later than normal, with a good service expected by mid-morning.
  • Saturday May 4 - severe disruption is expected, with little or no service expected on some lines.
  • Sunday May 5 - Tube services will start later than normal, with a good service expected by mid-morning.

What is Aslef saying?

Aslef says members have voted to strike as train drivers have not had a salary increase since April 2019.

General secretary Mick Whelan said: “Our members voted overwhelmingly, yet again, for strike action. Those votes show, yet again, a clear rejection by train drivers of the ridiculous offer put to us in April last year by the Rail Delivery Group which knew that offer would be rejected because a land grab for all the terms and conditions we have negotiated over the years would never be accepted by our members.

“We have given the government every opportunity to come to the table but it is now clear they do not want to resolve this dispute. They are happy for it to go on and on. Because we are not going to give up. Many members have now not had a single penny increase in pay for half a decade, during which time inflation has soared and, with it, the cost of living. We didn’t ask for an increase during the pandemic, when we worked through lockdown, as key workers, risking our lives, to move goods around the country and enable NHS and other workers to get to work.”

What is the Rail Delivery Group saying?

A spokesperson for the Rail Delivery Group said:  "Nobody wins when industrial action impacts people's lives and livelihoods, and we will work hard to minimise any disruption to our passengers.

“We want to resolve this dispute, but the Aslef leadership need to recognise that hard-pressed taxpayers are continuing to contribute an extra £54 million a week just to keep services running post Covid. We continue to seek an agreement with the Aslef leadership and remain open to talks to find a solution to this dispute.

“While we are doing all we can to keep trains running and we will work with our industry partners to keep as many trains running as possible, unfortunately there will be reduced services between Thursday April 4 to Tuesday April 9. Our advice is to check before you travel and follow the latest travel information.”

What is TfL saying?

Nick Dent, director of customer operations for London Underground, said: “Aslef is planning strike action on the London Underground on Monday April 8 and Saturday May 4.  We are encouraging Aslef to continue engaging with us so the strike action can be avoided. We would like to advise anyone travelling to please check before you travel, expect services to be busy and please allow extra time to complete your journeys.”
