TfL: Elizabeth Line becomes busiest railway service in UK with over 500 million recorded journeys

London’s newest transport service has broken multiple passenger records over the last two and a half years.

Transport for London (TfL) has revealed the Elizabeth Line is one of the country's busiest railway services with more than 500 million journeys since it first opened.

TfL has said the new figure makes the Elizabeth Line the single busiest railway service in the UK.

Since opening in May 2022 the line which connects Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the east to Reading and Heathrow in the west, has broken numerous passenger records.

During its first full year of operation, the Elizabeth Line saw more than 150 million passenger journeys.

On average, there are around 700,000 passenger journeys on the line every weekday, with the busiest day recorded on April 18 2024 when there were 787,000 journeys across the line.

The busiest station on the Elizabeth Line is Tottenham Court Road, followed by Liverpool Street.

Last year amid the two-year anniversary of the line, the service was reported to have made more than 350 million journeys since its launch.

Reflecting on the Elizabeth Line having surpassed a milestone of 500 million journeys, The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “The Elizabeth Line has been a game-changer for the city, transforming travel in London and unlocking investment through the creation of new jobs and homes.

“The evidence from the success of the Elizabeth Line is clear – when you invest in high-quality transport infrastructure it can provide huge benefits for increased jobs, growth and the new housing we need in London and across the country.”
