New Year’s Eve travel guide: TfL says free Tube and bus has been scrapped due to pandemic

All London Underground lines will run all night, apart from the Waterloo and City line, and certain London Overground lines will run through the night.

Londoners will not be able to enjoy free transport on New Year’s Eve for the second year running, Transport for London has said.

Normally Tube rides, bus trips and other public transport is free between 11.45pm on December 31 and 4.30am on January 1.

TfL said it was not able to afford to offer free travel, but all London Underground lines except the Waterloo and City line would be running all night.

Services on our transport network will run through the night, ensuring that people can enjoy everything London has to offer.”

The transport body had been searching for a sponsor to cover the costs, however its could not find one.

TfL said it would continue to look for sponsors for future years.

Bus

Buses will operate a normal Saturday service, with 24-hour and night routes running.

Tube

All lines will run throughout the night, with fewer services after 2am, except the Waterloo and City line.

Charing Cross, Embankment, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Westminster will close at 11.45 and reopen when possible - Victoria and Waterloo can be used as alternative stations.

On the Bakerloo line, there will be no service between Queens Park and Harrow & Wealdstone after 3am.

There will be no trains between Baker Street and Aldgate on the Metropolitan line, use the Circle or Hammersmith & City line.

There will be no services to Kensington Olympia on the District line.

London Overground

There will be a normal Saturday service on most lines, however some routes will run all night.

These are:

  • Highbury & Islington to Crystal Palace.
  • Highbury & Islington to West Croydon.
  • Liverpool Street to Enfield, Cheshunt and Chingford.
  • Richmond and Clapham Junction to Stratford (until 3.30am).

National Rail

However no Southern trains are running out of Victoria due to engineering work.

However, there will be bus replacements from Lewisham to Hayes and Sidcup.

TfL Rail

TfL Rail will be running overnight services between Liverpool Street and Shenfield, and Paddington and Reading and Hayes & Harlington.

DLR

The DLR will be running every 15 minutes overnight.

Trams

There will be an overnight service between Wimbledon to Beckenham Junction and New Addington every 30 minutes.

There won’t be any overnight services between Elmers End and Arena.

Taxi and Private Hire

Black cabs will charge an extra £4 per journey between 8pm on New Year’s Eve and 6am on New Year’s Day.

There may be an extra charge for private hire vehicles, so check when you book.
