Scam 'ULEZ' signs with QR-code links to fake payment sites and 'The Wombles' theme tune have been removed by a local council.

Hertfordshire County Council says it is removing the signage, which replicate Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) zone signs - but were not installed by the authority.

Some of the QR codes attached to the signs, located in Rickmansworth and Croxley Green, Hertfordshire, direct people to adult content websites.

Others directed scanners to the theme tune of the 1970s children's TV show The Wombles, composed by Mike Batt.

The council has reminded drivers that there are no ULEZ zones within Hertfordshire - and that Transport for London's (TfL) signs do not feature QR codes.

Councillor Phil Bibby said: "Hertfordshire's stance on the mayor's ULEZ remains the same, we will not permit TfL signs in the county and believe that TfL should redraw the boundary inwards and warn motorists of the impending zone inside London.

"If it was all fun that would be great, we have a great sense of humour in this country and our residents would have a giggle, but they're not."

"We don't want ULEZ signs on our county roads, so if you do see one the chances are it's a scam sign, it shouldn't be there."

He urged people not to access the QR codes and to report the signs.

"We’ll take action to remove them and work with our partners to try and bring the culprits to account," he said.

Members of the public wishing to report fake signage in Hertfordshire can do so online.
