Comedy duo Dick and Dom have seemingly weighed in on the ULEZ debate, after posing a question about its impact on tradespeople, old women and single mums on Twitter.

The Twitter account belonging to the pair, full names Richard McCourt and Dominic Wood, posted a message to query the effects of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) extension due later this year.

The tweet reads: “A question about the ULEZ expansion. What is an old lady on state pension with a non compliant car supposed to do, or trade with a work van who can afford to change, or a single mum who can’t make ends meet due to energy and food increase?!? How can they just ‘buy a new car’?”

The stars are known primarily for presenting late-nineties/early-noughties shows including Dick & Dom in da Bungalow.

It is not clear whether Dick, Dom, or both, were behind the tweet.

Among the responses is a comment from TfL’s official account, in which the transport body writes: “9 out of 10 cars seen driving in outer London are already ULEZ compliant - but for Londoners on low incomes, disabled Londoners and small businesses we have a £110m scrappage scheme that gives out grants up to £7.5k to buy a greener vehicle.”

The planned ULEZ extension is currently penned in to include all of greater London from August 29, after which date most drivers of non-compliant vehicles will be liable to pay the £12.50 daily charge.

Mr Khan has previously described the extension as “necessary” due to the impacts of toxic air on the health of Londoners.

What other celebrities have voiced opinions on the ULEZ?

Dick and Dom are far from the only public figures to air their take on the ULEZ extension.

Leonardo DiCaprio has made clear his backing of the initiative, describing it as “the king of large-scale, decisive action we need to halve emissions this decade”.

In a post on Twitter, Mr DiCaprio wrote: “Congratulations to @MayorofLondon for taking the lead on tackling air pollution in London. Clean air is a human right. #EveryBreathMatters.”

At the Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit, held in London on March 15 at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire philanthropist and former New York mayor, also signalled his support.

He said of Mr Khan: “He’s been relentless in tackling air pollution, and our foundation has been glad to support his innovative work and help more cities replicate it.”

Mr Bloomberg later added: “Sadiq has shown a lot of leadership, and the determination to do what’s right to protect public health, even when it’s difficult and even when it’s not popular.”
