While London escapes the brunt of the storm, which has triggered a rare red ‘danger to life’ alert, in South West England, we will still see heavy downpours over the coming days.

According to the most recent Met Office warnings, winds could reach speeds of up to 100mph in the Scilly Isles and Cornwall.

Wind speeds are expected to reach highs of 39mph here in London tomorrow (Friday, 9th January.)

An Amber warning for snow has also been issued for Wales, the Midlands, and parts of northern England.

An Amber alert has been issued for all regions in England. The alert will remain in effect until midday on Monday, 12th January.

According to the BBC’s latest weather forecast, the UK capital could also see ‘sleet showers’ on Sunday morning.

The latest forecast predicts sleet will fall across Greater London between 8-10am on Sunday (January 11).

BBC Weather says: “Saturday will be a settled day with plenty of winter sunshine. Areas of mist and fog are forming overnight. Sunday is expected to have a mix of variable cloud, local fog and some bright spells.

“Turning windy later in the day, with blustery rain moving in from the west overnight, this turning wintry for some on its leading edge. Monday looks to be dry and dull with easing winds.”

Sleet is a type of wintry precipitation made up of small, partially melted ice pellets. It forms when snowflakes fall through a layer of warmer air, melt into raindrops, and then refreeze into tiny ice balls before reaching the ground.

In short, it’s the midway point between snow and rain.
