Now he has suggested he could stand at a third election after his term ends in 2024.

Speaking at a Q&A session at the Centre for London conference, he told Caroline Wheeler, political editor of the Sunday Times, that he achieved the “biggest vote a sitting mayor has ever got”.

Addressing the annual think tank event, held on Tuesday, November 30, Mr Khan said: “The key thing is for us to deliver and have a good recovery post this pandemic.

“It was only six months ago we got the win in May, which by the way I keep reminding Boris, was the biggest vote a sitting mayor has ever got, which really annoys him.

“I tell Boris this with great glee, the only person who got more votes than me was me in 2016, which really annoys him.”

And pressed by Ms Wheeler on the question of whether he would stand again, he said: “If I have the support of Londoners, why not?”

The prime minister was London mayor between 2008 to 2016, before standing down and returning to the Conservative backbenches.

Mr Khan said his priorities over the remainder of his term were to work towards a greener, fairer and more sustainable capital.

He also said he intends to address the structural inequalities “exposed and exacerbated” by the coronavirus pandemic.
