Boy George struggled to hold back tears after former Health Secretary Matt Hancock, 44, entered the I’m A Celebrity camp on Wednesday night.

The singer, 61, from London, was visibly upset as he explained to fellow campmate Scarlette Douglas that his mother was in the hospital during the COVID pandemic. He admitted that he would’ve quit the ITV series after Matt’s entry if his mother had died.

Boy George said: “You know, beginning of the pandemic my mum was in the hospital. I wasn’t allowed to see her. I thought she was going to die.

“I was tweeting at Greenwich hospital going, ‘Please look after my mum.’ I used my name, I was like ‘Please look after my mum.’ And they did, she was fine.

“I feel like I don’t want to be sitting here like I’m having fun with him.”

Boy George appeared on the Lorraine show in April 2020, following his mum Dinah O’Dowd’s time in hospital.

Speaking at the time, he said: “My mum’s good, she’s back home now. She was in the hospital for two days, luckily it was not corona related so that’s good.”

The Karma Chameleon hitmaker wiped away tears on I’m A Celeb as he spoke openly to the camera and thought about whether he should stay or leave the show.

Boy George said: “If I had lost my mum, I would go. And I feel a little bit selfish, you know, just kind of… everyone’s so nice to him and I was like Jesus, what are we gonna do?

“I don’t want to spoil this experience for myself. I’m not good at hiding what I feel. Especially when it’s something so strong.”

After discussing his thoughts of leaving the show with his campmates, Coronation Street actress Sue Cleaver gave her advice, saying: “sleep on it tonight. Why he came in and what he’s doing here, is not our responsibility and it’s not for us to take on.”

Viewers took to Twitter admitting that they related to the star’s feelings, one wrote: “Absolutely spot on Boy George, lots of families couldn’t have their final moments together and he was swanning about like nothing was happening”.

Another wrote: “Boy George is so right. Imagine having lost someone due to Covid and Matt Hancock walks in. It takes the p***”.

A third said: “I can completely relate to Boy George about his mum. When my mum went into the hospital, I never got to see her again until in the Chapel of Rest and there Matt Hancock was, having an affair, not following rules”
