This will be the seventh time Londoners have gone to the polls to elect a mayor since the position was first created in 2000.

Londoners will head to their local polling stations this week for London’s mayoral and General Assembly elections. 

The vote takes place on Thursday May 2, this year with a new voting system and voter ID requirements.

A total of 13 candidates are running for the top job at City Hall, including Sadiq Khan who is hoping to secure a third term as the Labour mayor.

The London Assembly is there to hold the mayor to account, and it’s made up of 25 members, 14 of whom represent constituencies, and 11 represent all of London.

This will be the seventh time Londoners have gone to the polls to elect a mayor since the position was first created in 2000.

The election count will take place on Saturday May 4.

Photo ID

Voters must now show a photo ID at any polling station in the UK.

New voting system for London mayor

Previously voters were able to make a first and second choice vote - known as a 'supplementary vote' system.

Under the new system, voters can make one choice only. 'First past the post' is also used for UK Parliamentary elections.

Voting: Thursday May 2 2024 - polling stations open from 7am to 10pm

Verification of the number of ballot papers : Friday May 3

Count commences: Saturday May 4 2024 at 9am and a result in the mayoral election is expected on Saturday evening.
