London Bridge: ‘Smoke from escalator’ as London Underground station evacuated due to fire alert

A central London Underground station has been evacuated due to a fire alert, after reports of “smoke issuing from an escalator” at London Bridge Tube.

Passengers were asked to leave the station as a precaution, after firefighters and the British Transport Police were called.

The incident began at just after 1pm this afternoon (Monday, August 15) and Jubilee and Northern line services were halted.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Crews were called to reports of smoke issuing from an escalator at London Bridge Underground Station this afternoon.

“Firefighters carried out a thorough search of the area but there were no signs of fire.

“The brigade was called at 1.05pm and the incident was over by 1.37pm.”

While a spokesperson for the British Transport Police (BTP) added: “We were called at 1.06pm to reports of a fire alert and officers are currently assisting LFB.

“The station has been closed as a precaution.”

A Transport for London (TfL) spokesperson told LondonWorld: “There is a fire alert at London Bridge.

“The station is closed while we investigate, with Jubilee and Northern line services currently not stopping there.”

The station has since been reopened and services have resumed.
